History
Like that of other towns in Union County, the history of Wesley Chapel begins with the Waxhaw Indians, who were once the only inhabitants. In the early 1700s, the tribe was decimated by smallpox brought by European settlers, and those who survived, scattered throughout the area. In the early 1800s, the first church in the region, now called Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, was built on an abandoned campground. This church eventually gave Wesley Chapel its name.
In the 1890s, the area was better known as Price’s Mill. The Price family owned property, which included a gristmill, a blacksmithing and wheelwrighting business, and three gold mines. Descendants of the family went on to become prominent members of the community for generations.
Charlotte experienced a major banking boom, causing Union County’s population to grow significantly in the 1990s. It was at this point that the residents of Wesley Chapel took steps to incorporate the village. They feared annexation and wanted to preserve their independence and historic name, and the town of Wesley Chapel was incorporated in 1995.
