The most well known higher institution in the High Country is Appalachian State— nestled in the heart of Boone. Lees McRae is a liberal arts school located in Banner Elk, offering 23 majors. Maryland Community College is located in Spruce Pine and is affiliated with the Elderhostel Lifelong Learning Network— which provides ample continuing education opportunities for adults.
